C H A R A C T E R I N F O R M A T I O N
Name: Kaito Kuroba (A.K.A Kaitou Kid, A.K.A. Phantom Thief 1214)
Canon: Detective Conan/Magic Kaitou
Original or Alternate Universe: original
Canon Point: Black Knight storyline, Magic Kaito, following most of his current cameo appearances in Detective Conan. Right after Jack Connery AKA Nightmare falls to his death, taking one of Kid's gloves with him.
Number: 121

Setting: Detective Conan primarily takes place in Beika, Japan in a world much like our own. Magic Kaitou, on the other hand takes place in Ekoda, Japan. And while both series occur more or less simultaneous of each other, in Magic Kaitou, at least, it is hinted that things like magic may exist on a small level.

At least in regards to Akako.

History:
Son of Kuroba Toichi, the famous magician and original Kaitou Kid. (Toichi actually holds ties to both of Shinichi's parents; Yuusaku is responsible for the name Kaitou Kid, having misread the handwriting of the numbers 1412 in a journal as 'Kid', and Yukiko learned the art of disguise under his tutelage - Kaito even, briefly, met her, at the age of seven.) He was taught magic and various other potential Kaitou skills by his father at an early age, along with the lessons of "poker face" and "smile and heart". He met his best friend Nakamori Aoko around this time as well, in front of the clock tower, where he introduced himself with a flower and a smile (the magically appearing flower seems to be one of his favorite tricks when confronted with a girl).

When Kaito was nine, the black organization - who was racing against Kaitou Kid to find the Pandora Gem and unlock the key to immortality - killed his father by staging an accident with one of his magic tricks during a performance. Eight years later Kaito unlocked a hidden room behind a painting of his father and discovered his secret identity. However, something is wrong with this realization - Kaitou Kid has started up again, and it's certainly not his father!

Kaito goes to the scene of the next heist and confronts the pseudo Kid on the roof, scolding him for cheap tricks and unmasking him only to find out that the man was Kounousuke Jii, his father's old assistant. Jii explains that Kaito's father had been murdered and that he was attempting to lure out the killers; armed with this knowledge Kaito takes up the mantle of the thief with Jii's help in order to bring the murderer's down.

What follows are a great many of what could easily be considered filler chapters - various heists that Kaito pulls without any sort of direction - where he charms a princess (and cross dresses as her), has a robot double of himself made (and destroyed), is briefly suspected of being Kaitou Kid by his best friend's father and the leader of the Kaitou Kid task force, Nakamori Ginzo (and clears his name; also, cross-dressing as Aoko), discovers a sunken pirate ship (and then loses it), catches the eye of a beautiful young witch in his class named Koizumi Akako who decides to make him hers (she fails, but that doesn't stop her from continuing to try, and she does provide him with a bit of aide in more than a few chapters), goes on a high school skiing trip (and quite daringly dresses as Kaitou Kid for a costume contest; he also pretends to be a girl, and one classmate is noted to say "she has a pretty voice"), is framed for the disappearance of the Japanese prime minister (and clears his name), gets hounded for an entire night by robots with face recognition software (yet again, more cross-dressing), nearly gets shot by a possessed Nakamori-keibu (Akako again, being naughty, she stops trying to kill him at this point I think), steals a home run ball for a young boy (softie), investigates an apparent school haunting for Aoko (that involves a skeezy looking male teacher and hair growth potions), wins back a jewel studded pool cue for Jii (and maybe cheats doing it, but who's going to tell?), has his name used in an insurance scam for a large jeweled Christmas tree star and steals it anyway (and uses it to decorate Aoko's tree), gets fingered as the Kaitou Kid by yet another detective, Hakuba Saguru who attends his school as well and has to prove his innocence by staying handcuffed to the boy during a heist (here's where Akako comes to his aid, posing at Kaitou Kid; unfortunately this also leads to Aoko believing that Kaitou Kid is gay), stealing a sword and charming three generations of women in a family (crossover with Gosho's Yaiba)...

Until one night following a heist he gets a call warning him not to get in the caller's way. Kaito shrugs it off and goes after the Blue Birthday gem on Aoko's birthday. There at the heist he is confront by his father's killer, Snake, who mistakes him for Toichi, believing that he failed in killing him the first time. He demands the jewel Kaito has just stolen - and Kaito tosses him a fake - before shooting him. Thinking Kaito dead, Snake goes to the jewel to his bosses, unwittingly spilling the entire story behind searching for Pandora's gem that glows red in the moonlight and grants immortality for the listening ears of Kaito, who had managed to deflect the bullet with the real gem and lured the police to the men's hideout. They, however, manage to escape, but now at least Kaito knows his purpose. (He never makes it back in time for Aoko's birthday, but he does light up the entire side of a building to wish her a happy birthday instead).

Now Kaito narrows his thefts specifically to large jewels, lest he has a name to defend or a precious memory to save.

His next target is a ridiculously large green gem ring called the Green Dream being used in a play that rather closely seems to resemble Romeo and Juliet. Kaito snags the jewel, confirms that it isn't Pandora, returns it, and helps a sweet young actress being mistreated by the female lead find her place in the spotlight (she will later be quoted in a magazine as saying that Kaitou Kid is her prince charming - another one for your harem Kai-chan!). Snake looks on, but does not choose to intrude at this point.

Kaitou Kid announces his next target, The Red Tear, the symbol of a famous troupe of magicians and inheritance of a rather sour faced women who claims to hate magic (though she picks the pocket of a pickpocket to return Aoko's wallet to her and even Kaito acknowledges her skill at sleight of hand) and Akako warns him against it, citing great danger. In a rare show of self preservation, Kaito calls off the heist, but the men in black intend to get their hands on the jewel anyway, so Kaito disguises himself at their last show as one of the magicians (if you're paying attention you can tell it's him because he performs his father's signature magic trick) in order to keep the woman safe. At the same time, one of the men pretends to be Kaitou Kid and runs from the scene, leading the police stationed there on a merry chase, while Snake sneaks behind the scenes, trigger happy and hungry for the gem. Kaito throws himself in front of a bullet for the women (wearing a bullet proof vest) and whisks her off to safety, at the same time rejuvenating her faith and love in magic by revealing a sort of message left in the jewel from her deceased grandfather.

Kaitou Kid's next announced heist is, strangely enough, an entire clock tower (you find out in the process of the story that this is where he and Aoko met, and the owners plan to tear it down - as a result of his highly publicized heist, the owner's plans come to light and the clock tower is allowed to remain). This is Kaitou Kid's first meeting with Kudo Shinichi, the star of Gosho's series Detective Conan, who Akako warns Kaito against, claiming he's got the fierceness of a devil. During the heist Kid is nearly caught again and again by Shinichi, giving the task force advice from above. However, in the end, Kid manages to complete his task and escapes; for all appearances, Shinichi is the only one present to understand Kaitou Kid's true reasons behind the heist, even thinking to himself that this Kaitou Kid is not such a bad person.

Now here's where the timeline starts to get a bit confusing: Magic Kaitou was released before Detective Conan, but discontinued when DC became an instant hit. Kid began appearing in quite a few story arcs in this new series, his popularity among the readers quite evident. Most likely due to this extreme popularity, in 2007 a fourth volume of Magic Kaitou was released, followed by yet another appearance of Kid in DC the next year. And that isn't even getting into the subject of OVA's or the movies. As most long running manga series tend to be, timelines are sketchy at best, and I'll be mostly relying on release dates to figure out where each ties in, excluding the first meeting between Shinichi and Kid, which was released in MK 4 after a few cameo appearances in DC but - rather obviously due to the fact that Shinichi is big for it - takes place before any of these. (I'm also ignoring the first OVA because the Yaiba confrontation occurred in MK long before the existence of Conan and I'm just not going to touch such an obvious crumbling timeline; however, since OVA 4, also taken from an earlier MK, blatantly references the 8th movie, I'm going along with the Conan timeline for that one).

The clock tower story, both in MK and DC, is featured as a flashback, leading up to Kid's first attempt on the Suzuki family Black Star and Kaitou Kid's first face off with "Conan".

Kid leaves the police a riddled notice and Mouri Kogoro's aid is requested, thus pulling Conan into the case as well. Unfortunately, neither Mouri nor the police manage to correctly solve the riddle and lie in wait for Kid in precisely the wrong location. Conan solves it and goes to confront Kid, alerting the police to his presence using bottle rockets. Kid uses his voice mimicry abilities to send the police into a confused frenzy, and manages to escape Conan, leaving behind a note stating his true intent to steal the Black Star. This theft takes place on a ship and, disguising himself as Mouri Ran, Shinichi/Conan's childhood friend and Conan's temporary guardian (yes, more cross-dressing, he does this a lot) and managing to snatch the jewel. However, Conan figures out his disguise and lures him off to confront him. Kid only escapes by embarrassing Conan by insinuating that he took all of Ran's clothes and left her naked and leaps out the window to safety; he's forced to swim home, however, and catches a cold. But he's also through not taking Conan seriously.

A murder occurs in a remote meeting place for a handful of magic enthusiasts and Kid is there in disguise (as a fat, rather unattractive man, which darn near breaks Suzuki Sonoko's - Kid enthusiast extraordinaire - heart >.>). Conan, dead body magnet that he is, investigates and solves the murder with a bit of Kid's help from behind the scenes. He also fingers Kid, yet again in his disguise, forcing him to escape.

Kid announces his intent to steal the Memories Egg. He sets off a series of explosives that shut off the main power grid, forcing the backup power to come on in all but where the egg is being kept, where there is no backup power. Conan chases after Kid's glider with Hattori Heiji's aid until Kid is shot from the sky in his right eye and plummets into the sea and his presumed death. Kid's pigeon is also harmed. The egg is returned and Conan helps nurse the pigeon back to health, and - body magnet - a murder occurs, apparently by the same person that shot Kid. Conan investigates and confronts the murderer and is saved by one of Kid's projectile cards. Kid appears later disguised as Shinichi and Conan follows him and confronts him about his true identity, also revealing his belief that Kid had been disguised as one of the detectives for most of the movie. He also deduces that Kid wanted to steal the egg to give it back to the rightful owner. Kid basically tells him to stop being so nosy and just accept some actions as they are, takes the pigeon and leaves.

A large group of detectives are gathered using Kid's name to solve an old murder mystery and identify the location of a supposed great treasure. Kid disguises himself as Mouri Kogoro and brings Ran and Conan along. Hakuba Saguru from MK also appears. A murder occurs and what appears to be a domino effect of murders to follow it, but it's revealed in the end that all the detectives were working together to fool the criminal. On the helicopter back home the murderer throws herself from the helicopter, giving Kid the perfect excuse to jump out after her and avoid being darted by Conan who, once again, spotted him through the disguise. As a parting gift, Kid reveals the true treasure of the mansion.

Sonoko's uncle Suzuki Jirokichi challenges Kid to steal the Ocean's Miracle from him and Kid, never one to back down from a challenge, accepts. He announces that he will walk in to survey the land on the first night (though he does warn that if the display is a fake he will come in and take it anyway) and then come back again to actually take it. Kid wows Japan by appears to walk on air and sets everyone on edge for an attempt at the jewel from the sky for the next night. However, he disguises himself as Jirokichi himself and steals the jewel in a more subtle fashion. Once again, however, Conan spots him, popping up rather strangely in the side car of Jirokichi's motorcycle. Kid cuts him loose, allowing him to keep the jewel after a strangely philosophical discussion between the two (Conan also attempts to blow Kid up at this point in a very bad play of sportsmanship).

Kid attempts to steal the Crystal Mother only to discover that the one on display is a fake. Kaito only has the length of a train ride to locate and steal the real one, having gotten tickets for the train with Aoko. He eventually figures out where it is and steals it, escaping to the roof of the train, only to be confronted by Snake, using the Queen's son as a hostage. Kid blinds the man with his cape just before entering a tunnel and Snake fall from the train roof. Kid returns the jewel in Aoko's drink glass when he realizes that it isn't Pandora. (Conan's here too for this, but he doesn't do much, so it doesn't matter, except that Conan actually believes Kid didn't succeed, and Kid announces his next goal).

Kid attempts to steal the Star Sapphire being used in a play, disguised as Shinichi but eventually leaves without it (this involves Conan throwing himself off a roof, forcing Kid to attempt to save him - Conan tries to dart him and then opens a para-glider and safely lands). As a thank you for saving the jewel, the Mouri's and Conan are taken on a plane with some of the actors and the pilot is poisoned midflight. One of the actors takes control, apparently having taken lessons and asks Conan to assist, which tells Conan that he is really Kid as any normal person would not ask a 6 year old to copilot. Kid leaps out of the plane and lures a whole mass of police cars to a landing site for the plane, granting enough light for them to land safely.

On a camping trip the Shounen Tantei stumble upon the search for a diamond embroiled in murder. After much investigation and danger from booby traps on Conan's part, both the murderer and Kid in disguise are revealed, Kid having already discovered the diamond and returning it. Conan doesn't attempt to chase Kid at this point as Kid had saved one of his friends from dying earlier.

Kid is framed for the murder of a famous painter's father over a painting that he supposedly claimed to steal, however most are hesitant to believe that Kid would actually kill and an intense investigation follows that reveals the painter himself was responsible. Kid disguises himself, first among the TV personnel and then as one of the detectives to aide Conan in his investigation, even discovering where the supposedly stolen painting was hidden. Kid's name is cleared and Conan, once again, spots Kid through his disguise.

A diamond involved in a blackmail scam also appears to be Kid's next target. He avoids most of the action and only swoops in at the last moment when the jewel is about to fall into the ocean to snag it. He returns it after the full moon.

Kid disguises himself as Hakuba Saguru in order to help Conan solve a mystery that his and all his friend's lives depend on, even fishing him out of a river when he falls in while trying to escape a couple of villains. He also confronts an old target tied to Conan's entire case - in uniform - and exposes him and his partner for their wrong doings (the actual criminals of the case Conan was charged to solve) and then flies off to save Conan and company from a small bomb while they're riding a roller coaster. Conan, once again, fingers Kid as Hakuba through the disguise.

Kaitou Kid is challenged in a race by France's thief Chat Noir to steal a gold ring from a series of "Cat's Eyes" and he accepts, managing easy access onto the scene by being invited with Aoko by her father. He sneaks off, claiming that he's going home (during this time he gets a call from Hakuba who offers him a bit of information on Chat Noir and tells him not to get caught by anyone but him), only to disguise himself as an officer, setting the stage for a blackout during which he steals the ring from Nakamori-keibu. As he's working on his escape, he gets a phone call from Chat Noir who tells him that he stole a fake and she got the real one, only for him to turn it around on her and reveal that he spotted the fake and switched them. However, he also reveals that he knows why she was stealing the rings, as they rightfully belong to her anyway, and - having planted Jii on the same flight as her - gives her the real ring as a gift. Kid escapes once again and Chat Noir and him appear to be on good departing terms (though she is one of the few to know his true identity as well).

Cornered by the police, Kid is helped out of a tight spot by a mysterious man calling himself "Nightmare", who asks to join forces with him to steal a another target; Kid only agrees because he threatens Jii. Interpol is called in to assist due to Nightmare's large and backstabbing history (he pairs up with thieves only to set them up to be arrested when he tires of them). Kid disguises himself as the gem's owner in order to set a trap to steal the opals. Hakuba, on his way to the heist is waylaid by a fake text from Nakamori (in actuality sent by Kaitou Kid) leading his driver into heavy traffic, forcing him to arrive only after the theft has taken place. Kid confronts Nightmare who he has discovered is the head of Interpol and even goes so far as to explain why he's been doing it all. However, his son's voice startles the man off the roof and Kaito reaches to grab him, managing to catch one of his hands. Before he can pull the man up his glove slips off and the man falls to his death.

Personality:
Kuroba Kaito - Kaito's most visible first layer is that of a typical class clown. Daily, he can be expected to disrupt lessons with extreme practical jokes (aided by his bag of magic tricks), most often with his childhood friend Nakamori Aoko as the victim. He's also incredibly intelligent, as revealed in the first chapter when, while being chased around the classroom by Aoko wielding a broom with deadly intent, he is able to easily answer the teacher's math question. He will go to rather extreme measures all for a laugh, but oftentimes this jester side of his is also his favorite method of cheering someone up.

He's pretty straightforward and blunt and has a tendency not to mince his words, though it's almost always intended in the best possible way, and he does know when to call it quits with the jokes in a bad situation; he's an incredibly friendly person and tends to get along with people quite easily, and he's also quite popular with the ladies, though usually he's pretty dense about it (he didn't understand why everyone was giving him chocolate on Valentine's Day).

Kaito's a bit of a pervert, constantly peeking on his friend Aoko's underwear and picking the locks on the girl's locker room, though if he's confronted directly about issues concerning sex he tends to grow red and quiet.

He can be overconfident when confronted about things like his athletic ability and magic skills, but it's done mostly in jest. He picks on his friend Aoko a lot, but he's really quite weak to her and goes to all sorts of extreme lengths to make her happy (staging a heist around a clock tower that was important to her so that it wouldn't get torn down, letting her dad "stop" one of Kaitou Kid's heists so he wouldn't be fired, lighting up the side of a high rise building at midnight to spell the words "happy birthday Aoko") and it's rather obvious that he relies on the grade school method of tugging on pigtails to show that he really likes her.

Kaitou Kid - Kid is, by all rights, his more enigmatic side. Inspired by his father's early life lessons, Kid has adopted a "poker face" that keeps those around him from figuring out what he's thinking. Whether shocked or dismayed, he won't visibly react and thus, retains some sort of control of the situation.

He tends to speak in riddles or double meanings and delights in confusing others with his word play. Kid has a huge flair for the dramatics and delights in putting on a show with each heist. He's got his own fan club and is quite popular with the ladies (he may enjoy the attention, and he may charm them with a rose, particularly if it leads to an easier escape, but it never means anything to him either).

Though he is quick to call himself a "villain" he has a strict 'no one gets hurt' policy at his heists and will offer aide to the detectives chasing him in order to maintain this rule (even going so far as to leap off a roof after one of them). He - grudgingly - respects them for what they do and, so long as it does not interfere with his own goals, will help them out when he can, often with some sort of vague or philosophical parting quip to keep them guessing.

His pride as a showman has gotten him into trouble numerous times by answering direct challenges or showing up to discount a false heist notice, but he's always been unfailingly honest, as a thief, and will usually return the stolen item within a month, barring unusual circumstance.

He's also rather obviously cracked. He maintains a strict "no one gets hurt" policy that never seems to extend to himself, and the various risks and dangers he's undertaken through the series would only be attempted by one who has nothing left to lose. He is no way a danger to others, however, he is a very big danger to himself if he's not taken care of. Usually, this would be Aoko's job; but Aoko's not here. Following the immediate death of Jack Connery, Kaitou Kid (and Kuroba Kaito by extention) will likely fall into increasingly self destructive patterns.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Race: Japanese; Blood type: B; Age: 17; IQ: 400 (yes, I know sounds extreme, but that's what the manga said...); Height: 174 cm; Weight: 58 kg; Right Eye: 2.0; Left Eye: 2.0; Skills: Voice mimicry, disguises, acrobatics, magic, eidetic memory, lock picking, riddles, hang gliding, putting on a show, luck (yes, for him, luck is a skill); Weakness: ice skating, pride; Likes: Chocolate, skirt flipping, Nakamori Aoko; Weapon of Choice: Card gun; Phobia: Fish.

He has been shot in the right shoulder, upper left arm, several times in the chest with some sort of surface protection (bullet proof vest, jewel, etc.), and the right eye (deflected by his monocle). He most likely manufactures most of his gadgets himself, as he had the card gun before he found his dad's secret hideout and anything from eight years ago would be pretty out of date anyway.
